I have always loved drawing on walls. Even as a child I saw them as large blank canvases just begging for individuality. This blossomed into painting murals for kids rooms and at local schools along with lots of invitations to be on decorating committees.
In 2000 I took my first painting class at Humboldt State University and though terrified that my finished product would end up looking like a paint-by-number piece, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had a knack for it. It wasn't long before I had my fill of still lifes and as soon as the class ended, dove into nudes.
Bodies are beautiful and I enjoy studying all of the finer details and then trying to capture my interpretation on canvas.
I primarily paint in a larger scale partly because I am quite particular about my color blending, which is easier with more room and also becuase I tend to listen to music and dance around while I am painting and working large makes this possible (size does matter).
My favorite part of this creative outlet is when I step back and look at a finished piece for the first time, then jump up and down with excitement at how it trurned out. It brings out the inner child that as an adult, is so often stifled with that critical voice and self doubt. It is sincerely rewarding to create something that I, myself truly love. Each painting is like a child of mine.
My mother has asked me several times if I ever intend to paint someone clothed, but as my son once said: "it always seems like at least a boob ends up in there somewhere."
